This month we would like to spotlight a group of wonderful and motivated high school students from Brookland-Cayce High School who share their story. ” Our group’s name is S.A.H.T (Students Against Human Trafficking). MacKenzie Hafer, Maria Rubio, and Nyaw Too created this group to raise awareness about human trafficking. We created a project for our school’s DECA chapter to take to state competition; we started S.A.H.T. We learned about trafficking through recent events involving some of our friends that had been in situations where they were threatened by this issue.
We came up with the idea to host a county fair at our school, Brookland-Cayce High School, to raise money to go to this organization. We were sure students would be excited to support a local cause. We believe that it is very important to fight against this because it is a tragedy that occurs often but goes unnoticed. We want to do whatever we can to fight against it!
In last months newsletter we shared with you that there was the possibility of prostitution becoming legalized in Washington DC. On October 17th this proposal was brought before local government titled the Reducing Criminalization of Commercial Sex Amendment Act of 2019. We have excellent news. It did not pass!!! Please join us in celebration and also in keeping close watch on this topic. We have not seen the last attempt to strengthen this evil trade of our times.
What is Giving Tuesday?Giving Tuesday is only the year’s biggest day of giving outside Dec 31! It’s designed to kick-start the charitable end-of-year giving season, especially within the local community. This 24-hour giving event celebrates donors, organizations, and the do-good impact we have together.

Why participate in Giving Tuesday?Lighthouse for Life will be participating in Giving Tuesday for the third consecutive year. Our goal this year is $30,000. That’s not just a goal, that is a need. We have been so active all across SC these past 5 years and have celebrated many “wins.”There is still so much more to do and we can only do it with your help.
How do I participate in Giving Tuesday?
1.Donate. The graphic above lays out three easy options to give – write a check, through the lighthouesforlife.org webpage OR YOU CAN DOUBLE YOUR DOLLARS by donating through the Lighthouse for Life Facebook page starting at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday December 3rd. Every dollar given through our Facebook page will be doubled up to $100,000 or until Facebook runs out of money.
2.Donate as close to 8:00 a.m. as possible Facebook has set aside millions of dollars to match gifts but its first come, first serve. The closer you donate to 8:00 a.m. via our Facebook page the better chance you have for your impact to double.
3.Spread the word – please consider asking others to participate in this seasonal day of generosity to welcome the holiday season and to help Lighthouse for Life continue to fight human trafficking in SC.
4.Pray that God will be pleased with our efforts and that the hearts of others will be moved to participate.

As 2019 winds down, we get closer to a vote in the House of Representatives on S194. This is the bill we have been promoting to amend the criminal code to increase fines on sex buyers. The General Assembly will reconvene Tuesday, January 14, 2020. We hope Speaker of the House Jay Lucas will post S194 for a vote in the House as a first item of business. The vote is the LAST MAJOR HURDLE before going to the Governor for his signature to become law.
You can influence the vote by sending a postcard to your representative. These postcards are available through L4L. It is our goal to distribute 10,000 of these ready to mail postcards to communities all across SC. This week we have sent orders to Camden, Walterboro, Myrtle Beach, Irmo and Lexington, SC.To order your postcards email Info@lighthouseforlife.org
We are celebrating our wonderful and fruitful relationship with Saluda School District this month.School Superintendent Harvey Livingston was kind enough to share his heart in the following testimonial.
“This is our second year partnering with Lighthouse for Life. As the Superintendent of Saluda County Schools, my top priority is the protection of our students. Jen and her staff have conducted several trainings to educate our staff and school board on the signs of human trafficking and the resources available. This partnership will only grow as we continue to look at more ways to educate staff members and students. The more educated we are on this evil; the better prepared we are to protect our students and fight this battle. Thank you Lighthouse for Life for helping us to protect our students!”
