This month we would like to introduce, celebrate and honor community member Susan Jones.
Susan is an active member at Ebenezer Pentecostal Holiness Church. She learned about Lighthouse for Life from a friend she knew who was trying to connect with a local organization fighting human trafficking.
Susan and the partners at EPHC started a yearly 5K race in their community to raise funds as well as awareness. This was their 2nd year and and they raised $1,250 dollars!!! They are praying the race will grow in race participants, sponsors and funds.
Susan believes in this cause and is so very dedicated. When asked why this fight meant so much to her personally she said, "Lives are at stake and it could have been me in this terrible enslaved situation so I serve for freedom for the lives of others."
Susan and her team are perfect examples of the fact that everyone can do something. Nobody has to try to do everything on their own. We each have gifts, talents, experiences and connections in our sphere of influence that uniquely equip us to find our niche and to serve in our own special way.
Thank you so very much Susan Jones, EPHC and the community of South Congaree, SC for being incredible warriors in this fight. We are honored to have you as a part of our unit!
Help Stop the Legalization of Prostitution in Washington DC
On October 17, the Council of the District of Columbia will hold a hearing and vote on a bill that would make prostitution legal in our Capitol city and repeal the ban on brothels. If it passes and becomes law, it could encourage other areas in the U.S., including South Carolina, to do the same.
Once again, we’re asking you to contact your Senators and Representatives, this time to prevent the District of Columbia from decriminalizing commercial sex.
Also, Lighthouse for Life has been promoting legislation to increase penalties on sex-buyers. The District of Columbia decriminalizing commercial sex could make passing this law in South Carolina even more difficult.
When other nations have passed legislation like this, it has led to a spike in demand, and with it, an increase in the prostituted population. It serves as a state subsidy for sex traffickers, modern day slave traders.
Although this is not federal legislation and our senators and representatives don’t have a vote, Congress is empowered with a right to review laws passed within the District of Columbia. If the House and Senate pass a joint resolution and the President approves; it can be barred from becoming law.
It is urgent that we write to our legislators and ask them now to act to prevent the District of Columbia from decriminalizing commercial sex.
Come out and join us for our 4th Annual Lighthouse for Life Holiday Market! We will be featuring over 40 local vendors and many will be joining us for the first time. This is a fun, free, family friendly event. Doors open from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Lighthouse for Life News
Dear Lighthouse for Life Family,
This is a call to prayer. We are in a battle. We are all at war with Human Trafficking, one of the greatest evils of our time. As Lighthouse for Life has moved forward in these first few years into enemy territory it has been clearly revealed this enemy will not go quietly. When one is engaged in daily struggles it is often easy to lose sight of the long term strategy. Focusing on what we can see today and what we do not know about tomorrow is so very easy to do.
Recent circumstances have caused our eyes to once again turn to the only True Source of healing, help, wisdom and persistence. Please join us in asking the Father that His will would be done on earth just as it is in Heaven. Pray against spiritual forces and wickedness in high places. Pray we will be faithful soldiers and remember the real battle is not ours but is indeed the Lord's. Not our will but His be done. Thank you for praying for us as never before!
In November and December we will be printing and distributing printed postcards for citizens to fill out and send to local representatives to help see S194 come into law. Below is the content of the postcards.
RAISE FIRST OFFENSE FINES FOR SOLICITATION FROM UP TO $200 TO MINIMUM$250 UP TO $1,000. REPEAT OFFENDER FINES ALSO INCREASED. Fines have not been updated since 1986
NOT INCREASE FINES ON PROSTITUTION. Recognizes most people charged with prostitution are either current or recent trafficking victims. Victims will not self-identify due to fear. Most adult prostitutes were trafficked into life as children. For a child, sex trafficking is a trap from which they can’t escape; they age into badly damaged adults poorly equipped to exit the life.
PROVIDE TRAFFICKING VICTIMS WITH AFFIRMATIVE DEFENSE FOR CHARGE OF PROSTITUTION.
UPGRADE SOLICITING SEX WITH A PROFOUNDLY MENTALLY DISABLED PERSON TO A FELONY.
AFFIRM CURRENT LAW; A MINOR CANNOT BE CHARGED WITH PROSTITUTION.
STRENGTHEN THE HAND OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AND JUDICIARY.
**If you and your group would like to have some of these postcards to fill out and mail to your representative please just email Shelly@lighthouseforlife.org and be specific in how many you'd like and what method you'd like to use to get them.
